JAGA MEETING MINUTES

ST. JOHNS GOLF AND C.C

MARCH 23, 2010

OFFICERS IN ATTENDANCE:  Bob Streightiff, Joe Power, Barney Poston, Gary Owensby, Tom Tierney, Jerry Kay and Lee Crowe.

CALL TO ORDER:  Bob Streightiff, called meeting to order at 10:30 a.m.

INTRODUCTION OF CLUB PRO:  John O’Brian, Asst. Pro, said course is in good condition, welcomed us, and said we would tee off at 1:00, rather than the customary 12:30.

MOMENT OF SILENCE:  Bob Streightiff led us in a moment of silence.

INTRODUCTION OF DIRECTORS AND GUESTS:  We had 51 members and guests with 45 staying for golf

TREASURER’S REPORT:  Jerry Kay reported we have $10,113.68 in account, of which $1,691.92 is a carry over from the amateur tournament.

SECRETARY’S REPORT:  Gary made two corrections to last month’s minutes.

1.      Our speaker, John Mason, is co-chairman of the marshal committee at TPC.

2.      George Halvorsen reminded me that we hope to net $9,000 for the JAGA Partner’s program.  Also, George’s name is spelled Halvorsen.

VICE PRES. OF TOURNAMENTS:  Joe Power asked Lee Crowe to report on the 2-man tournament schedule.  Lee said he is having a difficult time creating interest in the tournaments.  The first tournament at Deerwood had a small field, and so far, interest in Panther Creek is small.  Lee wondered if he should continue with the series, or if schedule should be cancelled.  He felt perhaps the future venues would increase entries.

Gary Owensby asked about the conflict on Oct. 4th with Men’s Senior Interclub at Eagle Harbor and the Bill Black Tournament.  Lee said he would work on changing the Bill Black date.

Gary Owensby gave an update on the upcoming Senior’s Tournament at Eagle Harbor.  He reported that entries are coming in slow and asked for all directors to work hard to stir up interest in the tournament at their club.  He said in this economic climate, we need everyone’s A effort to promote the tournament.  Gary also said the Legends Division is being brought back, if we have at least 8 entries.  Gary likened his plea for support to George Halvorsen’s “rally cap” for the Junior Tournament and asked George to don his rally cap again.

Warren Healey added that Eagle Harbor looks upon this tournament as a sort of club senior championship and we try to get as much support as possible.

VICE PRES. OF ADMINISTRATION:  Bob reminded us that our next meeting at Selva Marina will be a working meeting, with no guest speaker.

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE:  Tom Tierney reported that everything is ok with the scholarship committee.  He will have 4 spots available, maybe even 5 or 6 scholarships for the next term.  We have 27 active now.

Tom said we will begin the interview process this year.

Jon Thompson presented a $3,000 from Timuquana Men’s Golf Association.

WEB MASTER’S REPORT:  Barney reported we have had three corrections to our directory and asked that we check our directory to assure it is up to date and accurate.  We also need each director’s e-mail address.

OLD BUSINESS:  Patrons Program was discussed.  We need more revenue for our tournaments.  We have decided to cut out the shirt and bag tag in order to cut the price and cost.  As for now, the program will be shelved until fall.

NEW BUSINESS:  Discussed problem with clubs that are delinquent in paying yearly dues.

GUEST SPEAKER:  Steve Wyand introduced our guest speaker, Ric Clarson.  Ric is the senior vice president for marketing development for the PGA Tour.  He has 27 years with the tour, is a Jacksonville native and played basketball 4 years for the Florida Gators, and was captain his senior year.  Ric majored in public relations.

Ric began by saying that the only thing that is constant is change.  And, by listening to our meeting and our discussing the problems we face today with the economy mirror the challenges the PGA Tour face in maintaining a full tournament schedule.

Ric outlined the beginning of the Player’s Championship, how Dean Beaman envisioned the TPC concept and of having a permanent home for the Tour Championship.  He discussed the rebuilding of the clubhouse at TPC, rebuilding of the golf course and Michelson winning the first tournament in the new clubhouse.  He discussed the importance of the last three holes.  NBC will telecast 22 live hours of the tournament, to 225 countries in 30 languages to 33 million viewers.

New this year will be “Patriot’s Outpost” for active and retired military personnel.  The 18th green will feature seating in air conditioned seats; that is, air circulating under the seats.  It will have a canopy top and feature food ordering from your seat.

The impact of the “Player’s” is $150 million per year, with $200,000 being raised for charity last year.

Ric discussed the new season long competition called the FedEx Cup.  Now they have a 33 week season with 4 playoffs, determining a season long winner.  He feels, in time, players will give this championship near equal credit to a major.

PAIRINGS COORDINATOR:  Russ Hamilton explained tee assignments.  Russ will be leaving JAGA, we hope temporarily.  Good luck Russ, and we hope you will be back soon.

BLESSING FOR LUNCH:  Blessing was given for lunch and meeting adjourned at 11:55a.m.

SUBMITTED BY YOUR HUMBLE SECRETARY,

GARY OWENSBY
