THE  PALENCIA  CLUB

FEBRUARY 23, 2010

OFFICERS IN ATTENDANCE:  Jim Edwards, Joe Power, Barney Poston, Tom Tierney, Jerry Kay and Gary Owensby

CALL TO ORDER:  President Jim Edwards called the meeting to order at 10:30 a.m.

INTRODUCTION OF CLUB PRO:  Mike Broderick welcomed us and pronounced his course to be in great shape.  He warned us of the greens, about a 9.5 on the Stimpmeter.

MOMENT OF SILENCE:  Pres. Jim led us in a moment of silence.

INTRODUCTION OF DIRECTORS AND GUESTS:  We had 61 directors and guests join us today.

TREASURER’S REPORT:  Jerry said we have $10,388.63 in the bank, of which $1,691.92 is from amateur, leaving us $8,696.71.  Jerry also said he has a list of the clubs that have not paid this year’s dues.  Please make sure your club has paid.

SECRETARY’S REPORT:  Gary made two corrections to the minutes for last month.  First, it was the Kochera family from Queen’s Harbour that gave the $1,000 back after their daughter’s apartment fire and gave it to the JAGA Scholarship Fund.  Secondly,  Gary had given Don Barker credit for 30 years service; it was actually 20.   The minutes were accepted and seconded.

VICE PRES. OF TOURNAMENTS:  Joe Power reported on the next 2-man, which is to be held at Deerwood.  With only 10 teams signed up, as of now, it may have to be cancelled.  We need 36 teams and Joe asked for help.

Gary Owensby gave an update on the upcoming JAGA  Seniors.

Barney introduced the new chairman of the Father-Son tournament, Larry Dismore.

Al Levene gave a report on the Underwood Cup, which was contested last week.  The professionals reaped their revenge this year.  Earl Strickland suggested we have  name tags made up for us when we work as volunteers, identifying us as JAGA members.

VICE PRES. OF ADMINISTRATION:  Bob is on vacation, again; this time in Palm Springs, Calif.  Joe announced that the next meeting will be at St. John’s Golf and C.C.

SCHOLARSHIP COMM.:  Tom gave a report on the last scholarship committee meeting and the changes that were voted on.

Palencia Men’s Association gave a check for $1,000.  The Champion’s Club men’s club gave $500, in memory of their recently deceased pro.  Jerry Kay asked that it would be a nice gesture if JAGA sent a card to the Champion’s Club in memory of their pro.

WEB MASTER’S REPORT:  Barney reported we have a list of meetings and tournaments on the website.  Please check your individual information and your club’s info. to make sure it is correct.

OLD BUSINESS:  Earl Kelly gave a report on the recently written book of the history of JAGA up to year 2,000.  He told of Dr. Charles Hilliard getting a committee together to create a city championship.  That first meeting was at San Jose C.C.

He said the initial  purposes for JAGA were also to promote junior golf and amateur golf in the greater Jacksonville area.

NEW BUSINESS:  George Halverson discussed the “Patron’s Program” as a means of raising money to support our tournaments.  He said we need 50 directors to participate and are looking for a total of 200 participants.  Our expenses will run about 50% of the $90 selling price.  We hope to raise about $18,000.

Pres. Jim said April will be a working meeting.

Past Pres. Jim Andrews reported on volunteering at the Players Tournament.

GUEST SPEAKER:  Our guest speaker, John Mason, is the vice-chairman of the TPC.  He started volunteering at the tournament just to have something to do on the weekend.  “Back then there were no shuttles.  I was walking to the club house and was offered a ride.  It was Jay Haas.  Now the players are protected from the crowds.”

John related several stories involving the tournament.  One told of a stalker and Ben Crenshaw.  She said she would flash him.  They had no problem getting volunteers to guard Ben.   He told of asking this rather poorly dressed man who was in the clubhouse grounds to show his pass.  It was Pete Dye.

There are now 800 marshals at the TPC, and is the largest group of volunteers.

PAIRINGS COORDINATOR:  Russ Hamilton explained the tees each group would play.

BLESSING FOR LUNCH:  Earl Kelly gave the blessing.

MEETING ADJOURNED:  Meeting concluded at  11:45 a.m.

Submitted by your humble Secretary,

Gary Owensby
