SECRETARY’S REPORT:  Gary Owensby had the following corrections to the minutes of last meeting.

(c)    The $600 Lee Crowe referred to last meeting, were proceeds from the Bill Black Tournament.

(d)    The October minutes referred to the impending 2-man tournament as being held at Sawgrass, when it was actually at Ponte Vedra Inn and Club.

VICE PRESIDENT OF TOURNMENTS:  Joe Power reported on the tournament schedule for next year.  Jim Edwards reported on the upcoming Pro-Pres. Tournament, being held at the Long Point Club on Amelia Island.

Bob Streightiff said next year’s Amateur will be at the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club in July and will probably include a qualifier.  We need two directors to help run the Amateur and perhaps two to run the match play tournament that is being planned.

VICE PRESIDENT OF ADMINISTRATION:  Bob reminded us that January meeting will be at Windsor Parke on the 18th.  Bob is working on having the May meeting at Amelia National.

The board of directors has voted to institute 2 new awards for next year, the pro of the year and the director of the year, which will be presented at the Pro-Pres.  Actually, only the pro of the year award is new, since a director of the year will be presented today.

Fred Seely explained that the request for past presidents from the year 2000 back to fund the printing of the history of JAGA book rather than one individual, was his idea.

GUEST SPEAKER:  Steve Wyand introduced our guest speaker, Rick Rhoden.  Rick is a native of Daytona Beach High School who went on to pitch major league ball for the Dodgers and then Yankees, Pirates and Astros.  He became one of the best hitting pitchers of his era.  Rick talked about the early days of his career, being picked by the Dodgers in the first draft.  He said they traveled by bus in those days.  He made the point that at that level, you find out everyone was the best at their position in their native area.  That’s true of golf and baseball.  Rick said he was kind of spoiled in that he was on a World Series team right off and played in the World Series 3 of his first 5 years.  He told several stories involving old team mates and coaches.  One involved Yogi Berra being asked to comment on a restaurant in Pittsburg, and Yogi answered, “no one goes there anymore, it’s too crowded”.  Another “Yogism”:  When asked if he was going to attend a teammate’s funeral, Yogi replied, “No I won’t; after all, he won’t be going to mine”.

Rick began playing golf in earnest after he retired from baseball, having played for 15 seasons.  He was practicing golf in Daytona when he was told about a new celebrity tournament.  He thought, I am playing golf anyway, why not play with someone else’s money.  It was a no brainer.  That’s how it started and he has won 8 of the 19 times he has competed.

Rick moved to Jacksonville area in 2000.  He has won 52 tournaments in his new career.  He said he moved here to get ready for the Senior Tour.  He won the qualifying school tournament and did some Monday qualifying on the Senior Tour.  He hasn’t played on tour for 2 years now.

Rick answered some questions and then was presented with a set of JAGA glasses by Bob Streightiff.

PAIRINGS COORDINATOR:  Al Boyce went over the game for today.

BLESSING FOR LUNCH:  Earl Kelly gave the blessing

MEETING ADJOURNED:  Pres. Jim tapped the gavel for the last time as President.  He thanked everyone for their efforts during his tenure and asked for their cooperation with the new board of directors.  We all thank you, Jim, for your direction and leadership.
