JAGA MEETING MINUTES
SAN JOSE C.C.
JANUARY 19, 2010
OFFICERS IN ATTENDANCE: Jim Edwards, Bob Streightiff, Joe Power, Barney Poston, Gary Owensby, Tom Tierney, Jerry Kay and Lee Crowe.
CALL TO ORDER: Pres. Jim called meeting to order at 10:30 a.m.
INTRODUCTION OF CLUB PRO: Todd Bork, Director of Golf, welcomed us to his course. Todd asked that we repair all divots and ball marks. He said course is in good condition, greens are very fast. We would have a 12:30 shotgun and asked each group to keep up with group in front of them.
MOMENT OF SILENCE: Pres. Jim asked us to remember those of us that are ill, and remember our men and women in uniform all over the world.
INTRODUCTION OF DIRECTORS AND GUESTS: We had a total of 62 directors and guests today, of which 59 played golf.
TREASURER’S REPORT: Jerry reported that we have a total of $10,088.46 in the bank. Of that, $1,691.92 came from the amateur. Core money is $7,896.64.
SECRETARY’S REPORT: Secretary Gary said last month’s minutes are on the web and asked and received a motion to accept said minutes.
VICE PRES. OF TOURNAMENTS: Joe Power asked Lee Crowe to report on the 2-man schedule for the year. Lee said we would have 6 tournaments this year at some very good venues.
Joe discussed the four major JAGA tournaments of the year and reiterated our need for volunteers.
Jim Edwards reported on the pro-pres. at Amelia Island. Jacksonville Golf and C.C. won in a playoff on the card with two other teams.
VICE PRES. OF ADMINISTRATION: Bob Streightiff announced that our next meeting would be at the beautiful Palencia Club, and at St. John’s C.C. in March. This is our first time holding a meeting at St. John’s.
Bob said he has signed a contract for the city amateur. We expect a full field, making the qualification round very important.
SCHOLARSHIP COMM.: Tom gave a report on the scholarships. Jim was presented a check for $600 by George Halvorsen from the Marsh Landing Sr. Men’s Assoc. Quail Hollow presented a check for $300 from their men’s assoc. and Bob Streightiff presented a check for $500 from Queen’s Harbour men’s assoc. Bob said Don and Ann Moore, members of Queen’s Harbour, donated another $500. Bob related the story of the daughter of one of the club’s members lost everything in an apartment fire. Many of the members contributed to buy essentials for her. Her father gave the money back, thanking the club for their generosity and asked it to be given to us.
WEB MASTER’S REPORT: Barney Poston reminded us that the user name to get to the JAGA directory is “remember”, and the password is “billblack”. We also now have the Northern Florida PGA Chapter schedule and the Men’s Senior Interclub schedule for 2010 on the web site.
Barney also reported on the status of Carl Arnold and his wife. Unfortunately, Carl will be moving to Wrens, Ga. to be near his wife.
OLD BUSINESS: President Jim said the only old business was to remind us of the need for volunteers for our tournaments.
Earl Kelly reported on a 50 page book he has just completed chronicling the history of JAGA. We are going to try to make them available to member clubs for a modest price. He said we are about 3 months away from being ready for publication.
NEW BUSINESS: Jim Andrews reminded us that the Player’s Championship is coming soon and he has openings for marshals for the 2nd hole.
Bob Streightiff discussed the need for new officers in the future and active directors. He said JAGA is perceived well in the community, not just as a bunch of senior men who meet to have lunch and play golf. We are being seen as a more business like group, well organized and working to build the game of golf.
Joe Fitzgerald has volunteered to take over some of the web site responsibilities, as well as the Father-Son Tournament.
Bob also discussed the JAGA Partner’s Program. “We need additional revenue to run our tournaments. This is one way we can do this.”
Al Levine discussed the upcoming Underwood Cup.
GUEST SPEAKER: Our guest speaker, Barry Palm, was introduced by Larry Burke. Barry is a marketing and communications specialist, and a published editor and golf journalist. He is the past president of the Donald Ross Society, which he started in 1988. Barry gave us an overview of the Ross Society his imprint on Northern Florida. Barry has lived in the area since 1995. He grew up in Connecticut on a Donald Ross course, where his father was a member. He was burned out on golf as a young man, and then regained his interest in his 20’s.
Mr. Palm said he started the organization to help restore Ross courses that had been changed through the years to their original design. They help by researching for the original blue prints to courses. There are officially 412 Ross courses around the country.
One interesting subject was the greens at Pinehurst #2. He said the “upside down saucer greens” were not an intentional concept of Mr. Ross. The greens built up over the years due to over seeding. The introduction of Bermuda grass at Pinehurst was mainly responsible for that.
Ross courses are known for their run up areas to the greens. Traps were positioned about 30 yards in front of the greens where 2nd shots would run up. He was also known for his land use, by shaping courses around the land he had to work with.
PAIRINGS COORDINATOR: Russ went over who would play which tees.
BLESSING FOR LUNCH: Don Barker gave the blessing. Then Don gave us a sad announcement; that this would be his last meeting. He has been a director for over 30 years. Don remarked how different JAGA is now than it was even 10 years ago, and for the better. All of us wish Don the best and will miss his presence and contributions.
MEETING ADJOURNED: Pres. Jim brought down the gavel at 11:32 a.m.
Submitted by your humble secretary,
Gary Owensby |
