JAGA MINUTES FOR MAY 4, 2009

 DEERCREEK COUNTRY CLUB

OFFICERS IN ATTENDANCE:   Jim Edwards, Bob Streightiff, Joe Power, Gary Owensby, Jerry Kay, Tom Tierney, and Lee Crowe.

CALL TO ORDER:  Meeting called to order by President Edwards at 10:30 a.m.

INTRO OF CLUB PRO:  John Townsend greeted us and said the course was in good shape, although the greens had been sanded in the past two days.

MOMENT OF SILENCE:  President Edwards asked for a moment of silence for those sick or deceased.  He also asked for support of our troops serving around the world.

INTRODUCTION OF DIRECTORS AND GUESTS:  Attendance is 43.

TREASURER’S REPORT:  Jerry Kay reported we have $9,402.49 in the bank.

SECRETARY’S REPORT:  Motion was given to accept last month’s minutes and seconded.

V.P. TOURNAMENTS:  Joe Power turned to Lee Crowe for an update on the 2-man schedule.  Lee asked for entries to be in by next Thursday for the 2-man at Palencia next Monday.

In response to having fewer tournaments, which has been suggested by the Board of Directors, Lee felt that would be all right.  He said his mission for having 10 tournaments was to give more people a chance to play some of the better area clubs at a lower price than they ordinarily could.  However, if that is what the board wants, that is what we will do.  He said he did want to retain the Tournament of Champions at the end of the year.

Joe Power reminded us that the Father-Son will be held at Hidden Hills June 27-28 and the Junior Tournament will be July 14 & 15.  We need volunteers for the Junior Tournament, which JAGA is partnering with N. Florida Junior Golf Assn.

V.P. ADMINISTRATION:  Bob Streightiff discussed the need for more cooperation from member clubs in getting their current club champion to play in the upcoming Amateur Tournament.  He also discussed the need for more volunteers.  The qualifier round will be held on the 13th, the day before the Junior. It will be a very busy time.

Bob also reminded us that the next meeting is at Deerwood on June 22.  And, he has visors for sale.

SCHOLARSHIP COMM. REPORT:  Tom Tierney reminded us that the deadline for getting in scholarship applications is June 15.  He reported that the scholarship committee met before the meeting and voted to award 6 scholarships for the upcoming year.

Tom said the JAGA Scholarship Program must be getting some notoriety.  He is getting unsolicited letters from high school students and college freshmen.

Ponte Vedra Golf and C.C. Men’s Golf Assn. presented a check for $5940.

OLD BUSINESS:   Jerry Kay reported that Southern Oaks, Amelia National, Cimarrone, Deerfield Lakes, Eagle Landing, NAS Jax and TPC have not paid their dues, as yet.

NEW BUSINESS:  President Jim said that if you, as a director, leave your club or drop your membership to the club you represent, you are no longer a JAGA director.  Case in point, Steve Lemley is not a member of Southern Oaks, and therefore, cannot be a director.  He also said that member clubs are responsible for letting the person know the rules.

Each director is also responsible for having a verifiable USGA handicap.  You must have one in order to play in any of our tournaments.  One example, Ed Bobola hasn’t established a handicap since he came back from illness.  However, all that is needed is to start entering his scores in the system, which can be done on line.

A $50 donation was given by a Plantation Club former member’s family.

Question was brought up if we are going to adhere to meeting the 3rd Tuesday of each month.  The answer was positive, although there may be exceptions.

GUEST SPEAKER:   Steve Horner is our guest speaker for this meeting.  Steve is a member of the winning Underwood Cup team.  He is also vice president of development for the PGA Tour.  He said his main job is selling title sponsorships for PGA Tournaments.  Steve said golf, in general, has taken a bum rap of late.  He said he never thought he would hear an elected official of the United States say people who play golf are ripping off the U.S. taxpayers.  He said $154 million is generated every year by the PGA.  The Tour is about charity support.  The Player’s Tournament gives our area a great week of golf.  Ticket sales are great.  Charlotte had a record attendance this year. Even though the title sponsor was unable to take part in the tournament activities.  This in the face of our current economic climate.

Steve then went on to discuss the Underwood Cup, which was started in 1992 by Fred Seely.  He said the Underwood Cup changed how amateur golf is perceived in Jacksonville.  The event is special, with a small group of players; but, it is an incredible experience.  It is one of a kind.  He said Timuquana is the perfect venue for this tournament.   It is match play, alternate shot in foursomes.  He said this is the showcase event in amateur golf for our area.  Steve said he had more radio interviews due to the Underwood Cup than he does with his job.  Future captains check regularly, to see who is playing well.  It takes a lot of time.  You earn points by where you place in area events during the year, such as the Clay County Classic.  Steve went on to say how much he appreciates what JAGA does for amateur golf in Jacksonville.

Steve talked about the state of golf in today’s economic climate.  He said the sport is on the verge of a significant downtown, if we don’t do something.  “The present political scene and economic times are working against it.  We need to be active and visible.”

BLESSING FOR LUNCH:  Don Barker gave the blessing.

MEETING ADJOURN:  Meeting concluded at 11:30
