JAGA  MINUTES FOR APRIL 21, 2009

Southern Oaks C.C., Lake City, Florida

PREFACE:  Our host  club, Southern Oaks of Lake City, invited us to a tour of Lake City Community College.  We met at 9:30 a.m. and  were welcomed by Mr. John Piersol, Director of  the Golf/Landscape/Forestry Schools.  John told us how valuable JAGA has been to the university over the years, both financially and supportively.  We were introduced to three JAGA Scholarship recipients, each of which thanked JAGA for their support.  We were then taken on a guided tour of the turf and golf schools.

CALL TO ORDER:  President Edwards called the meeting to order at Southern Oaks Country Club at 11:05 a.m.

OFFICERS IN ATTENDANCE:  Jim Edwards, Bob Streightiff, Joe Power, Gary Owensby, Barney Poston, Jerry Kay,  and Tom Tierney.

INTRODUCTION OF CLUB PRO:  J. D. Dedge welcomed us to his club and  felt we were in for a beautiful day of golf.

MOMENT OF SILENCE

INTRODUCTION OF MEMBERS AND GUESTS:

TREASURER’S REPORT:  Jerry Kay  reported we have $8938.47 in the bank.  This will be changed by the  expenses of the Senior’s Championship.  Jerry also went over the list of clubs that have not paid their JAGA dues.

SECRETARY’S REPORT:  The minutes of the March meeting were accepted and seconded , with the appreciation of the Secretary.

V.P. TOURNAMENTS REPORT:  Joe Power announced the next  2-man, which will be held at Palencia C.C. on May 11th.  Barney Poston reported it is too early for any movement in the Father-Son Tournament.  Joe then turned to George Halvorsen to report on progress in the Junior Tournament.  George said we have now partnered with N. Florida Junior Golf Association.  This will result in our using their soft ware for signing up and paying on line.  Ponte Vedra Golf & C.C. at Sawgrass will host the Junior this year.  We hope to field between 70 and 80 players.  Cost will be $90, with us netting $85, with a $5 sign up fee.  George reminded us that this will be the 52 edition of the tournament, and asked for volunteers to help run the event.

V.P. ADMINISTRATION REPORT:  Bob Streightiff reported on the progress of the Amateur Tournament, being held at Palencia on July 23 – 26.  Bob asked all directors to find out who is their club champion and ask them to play in the tournament.  This year the cut will be at 39 players.  Bob also asked for volunteers, needing 4 marshalls.  He reminded us that our next meeting is May 4th at Deercreek. Nice to have Bob back..

WEBMASTER REPORT:   Mike Cooper told Barney that when he checked the roster to make sure he had signed up for this meeting, he could only pull up the first page of names.  Barney said he would check it out.

SCHOLARSHIP REPORT:  Tom Tierney said there would be a meeting of the scholarship committee before our next director’s meeting.   The scholarship fund will move from Raymond James to a totally free checking account.  Raymond James wanted a $500,000 minimum in the fund; thus, the move.

Tom said if anyone had  a candidate’s paper work to hand in, please do it in the next 2 weeks.

Ray Gottschalk of Sawgrass C.C. presented a check for over $8,000  from his club and Gary Owensby presented a check for $1,951.87 from the Senior’s Championship.

OLD BUSINESS:  None

NEW BUSINESS:  President Edwards said it had come to his attention that perhaps we should allocate so much each tournament to pay for the new radios and so much for the insurance.  He felt this wasn’t necessary.  We will just charge each tournament with $100 and that will cover both.  We are locked in for three years with the insurance rate.

PAIRINGS COORDINATOR:  Russ Hamilton  said the pairings were made and we would be teeing off at 12:30 p.m.  We would convene after golf in the same room.

BLESSING FOR LUNCH

MEETING ADJOURNED:  11:35 a.m.
