Introduction of directors and guests, a total of 62, including speaker.
Point was brought up by Earl Kelly that all twelve of the men who started JAGA have passed on now. New directors were welcomed by President Jim Edwards.
Treasurer’s Report: Jerry Kay reported that we now have $6984.77 in the bank. Mr. Kay also announced which clubs have not paid their dues for the coming year.
Joe Power gave his last secretary’s report as the outgoing secretary. Minutes of last month’s meeting were accepted and seconded.
Joe Power, as new V.P. of Tournaments, made the point that when he joined JAGA four years ago, we had 5 tournaments. Now, we have 15, with a much more pressing schedule.
Lee Crowe pointed out that there are only 15 spots open for the Feb. 2, 2-man tournament at The King And Bear. We also have a new tournament this year, the Tournament of Champions. If you finish 1st or 2nd in any of the tournament series, you are eligible for the Tournament of Champions. Joe Power reminded us of the JAGA Seniors in April and Gary Owensby would be tournament chairman this year. Joe then opened a discussion concerning the participation of directors in attending meetings, with the problem of some directors only attending meetings at the more popular venues. He announced that a motion was carried at the board of directors meeting that each member club must have at least one of their directors in attendance for 9 of the 11 current year meetings in order for that club to participate in that year’s Pro-President Tournament.
Vice Pres. of Administration, Bob Streightiff, gave his report. The City Amateur Tournament would be held at Palencia July 23-26. An agreement has been reached that the tournament will rotate between Palencia, Jacksonville C.C., Timuquana, Deerwood, Marsh Landing, San Jose and Sawgrass C.C.
The Junior Championship. Joe Power announced that George Halvorson has agreed to run this year’s tournament. George gave the members and guests an informative summary of the meeting he and Joe Power had with the N. Florida Jr. Golf Association and their interest in forging a marriage between their organization and ours for the purpose of making this tournament the most prestigious junior tournament in the area. George said they do not appear to be wanting to take over the tournament; but, are willing to lend us their data base and other areas of marketing. George gave us his opinion that we should pursue this opportunity.
Past President Lee Crowe gave his report on the Pro President Tournament. He thanked Bob Streightiff for having the trophy rebuilt. Marsh Creek was the winner “again”. Summer Beach at Amelia Island is the venue for this year. Lee announced a change to the tournament schedule for this year; from June 15 to June 8 for the two-man at Ponte Vedra. President Jim Andrews thanked Lee for his work in running the tournaments.
V.P. of Administration, Bob Streightiff, reported that we need to do a better job of signing up the Thurs. before the month’s meeting and calling by Sunday to cancel or you will be charged a $50 penalty. He asked that we try to keep the cancellations and changes to a minimum. Ed Tormollen was recognized for his past work in handling the monthly golf outing after our meetings. Russ Hamilton has taken over that responsibility. A reminder that next month’s meeting is Feb. 10 at Hidden Hills. Bob also reported that we, as directors, need to try to make each meeting, not just the ones at more popular venues He sited a graph created by Earl Kelly that will be available by email that tracks last year’s attendance.
Web Master, Barney “Ace” Poston, reported that a virus warning was detected and was cleared up by the provider. Barney also asked our new directors to see him after the meeting to have their pictures taken, which will then be attached to the web site.
Scholarship Report. President Jim reminded us that everything concerning a scholarship recipient goes thru the sponsoring club’s director, not Tom Tierney. Champions Club presented a check for $500, Amelia Island Plantation a check for $1,000 and Quail Heights a check for $200. Bob Streightiff reported a $200 profit from sale of hats and visors which also went to the scholarship fund.
Guest Speaker. Fred Seely introduced the sports editor of the Times Union, Chet Fussman, as our speaker for today. Mr. Fussman began with a golf joke, discussed his love of horse racing and golf. He is from Wisconsin and has been in Jacksonville 9 years. Mr. Fussman discussed the great area we live in, having had two national champions, a Heisman Trophy winner and The Players Championship to cover. He discussed the Tebow coverage and has written an editorial about it.
Mr. Fussman said some of the most passionate fans are Nascar and high school football fans. He said his job is running the daily activities of the paper, editing copy and fielding calls about coverage. He welcomes criticism, especially on the constructive side. Running the paper’s website is also his responsibility and he discussed the future of the internet on the newspaper industry in general. The paper tries to cover as many events as possible, locally. But, golf is at the heart of what they do. It is inherent to the area.
Questions to Mr. Fussman:
Lee Crowe - Why we don’t have more coverage of JAGA tournaments? Answer - We have fewer resources to cover more events. We will try to cover more events if JAGA calls them. Question: Will the internet become more important in the future, instead of the newspaper. Answer: That’s the $64,000 question. Younger people seem to use the internet more for their news, older populous still seem to like the physical paper. Certainly, they don’t want to alienate the customers they have. Miles King: Can you sell cars on the internet like you do in the paper. Answer: Yes and the cost is less. Still, more is sold in the paper than online, although classified ads have gravitated more to online. Fred Seely: When will you start charging people for using online site. Answer: The theory is that if you charge, people will go somewhere else. Question: Coverage of Jaguars. Answer: How the team fares has nothing to do with how they are covered. However, the better they do, the more interested people are in them. He commented that the coverage the Times Union would be more objective than what you would read on the team’s website.
Pairings Coordinator, Russ Hamilton, announced pairings were ready, although they had several cancellations, due to cold weather.
The blessing was given for lunch
Meeting Adjourned: 11:35
