Jacksonville Area Golf Association Directors Meeting Deerfield Lakes Golf and Country Club September 16, 2008
Officers Present: Lee Crowe, Jerry Kay, Bob Streightiff, Joe Power, Jim Andrews, Tom Tierney and Barney Poston. Absent: Jim Edwards
President-Lee Crowe called the meeting to order at 10:29 AM. Immediately after a Welcome from Deerfield Lake’s Head Pro, Nathan Carter, Lee requested a moment of silence for Bill Black and all other officers or family members who have recently passed away or are suffering. Then 32 directors and guests were introduced to one another.
Treasurer, Jerry Kay reported a treasury balance of $2,811.62 This does not include some $6000 received for tournaments.
Secretary’s Report - Joe Power’s Minutes of the August meeting, as previously posted on the Web site, were approved.
Vice President–Tournaments, Bob Streightiff reported: (1) The Bill Black Tournament on September 8th at the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club drew only 14 teams this year. There were more door prizes than players. Winners of the Net Division were headed up by Miles King. The Gross Division was led by the team headed up none other than our own President, Lee Crowe. The event raised more than $3000 for the Scholarship Fund. (2) The Juniors Tournament was held on September 13 and 14 at Jacksonville Beach Golf Club. Al Levene reported that the abbreviated field of 52 (32 less than last year) played some outstanding golf and, thanks to Miller Electric, raised $1858 for the JAGA Scholarship Fund. The Winners included: Boy’s-12 and Under (5143 yds.) Devin Suri 68-77 =145 Boy’s- 13 and 14 (6114 yds.) Alex Williamson 73-84 =157 Alex birdied against John Jonas,1st hole of sudden death, to win. Boy’s Championship (6459 yds.) A.J. Crouch 70-73 =143 Girl’s Championship (5663 yds.) Amelia Lewis 71-73 =144. (3) October 20th is the next 2-man at San Jose Country Club. Get your entries into Lee Crowe as soon as is possible. (4) New directors should see Bob for a JAGA ball marker and hat clip. (5) JAGA Hats ($15) and Visors ($10) are still available for sale. (6) Check the August issue of Florida Golf Central for a fine article on the JAGA City Amateur. Players were responsible for half of $539 to the Scholarship Fund at this years’ event. (7) Ed Tormollen will be stepping down from running the JAGA Directors monthly game.Thank you Russ Hamilton for stepping up to continue Ed’s fine work. (8) Directors, be ready to step up and help in the many events scheduled for next year.
Webmaster – Barney Poston reported that (1) Reservations are going smoothly; Make sure you include your current USGA index when signing up, (2) get your picture taken for the Web site if you are new (or have aged since your last pose) and (3) new software is working very well.
Vice President-Administration, Jim Edwards was absent for the first time in a very long time. Lee Crowe reported (1) the next JAGA directors meeting will be Tuesday October 21st, beginning at 10:30 AM at the Windsor Parke Golf Club. Our guest will be Jim Furyk. (2) Many thanks to Miles King for his participation, activity and contributions in and to JAGA.
Scholarship Committee – Tom Tierney reported “not to worry”, the Scholarship Fund is in a very conservative investment. Market volatility should not have that great an effect on its ultimate value.
Old Business – None
New Business - A nominations committee will present a slate of candidates for 2009 officers at the October meeting. Voting will occur at the November meeting with terms to begin in January.
Pairings Coordinator, Ed Tormollen asked us to double check all information that we submit when signing up to play.
New Directors – Shirts are available from Ed Witten for $25; Badges from Arch Copeland are free.
The Blessing for Lunch was given by Lee Crowe.
