President-Lee Crowe called the meeting to order at 10:29 AM. Immediately after a welcome from The Slammer and Squire’s Jamie Selby, Lee asked for a moment of silence for officers who have either passed away or who continue to suffer from ongoing illnesses, especially Ed Bobola, Jerry West and Ed McDonald.  70 directors and guests were then introduced to one another.

Treasurer, Jerry Kay reported a treasury balance of $31,372.50.  When all monies for tournaments and known expenses are extracted, a JAGA balance of approximately $5500 will remain.

Secretary’s Report, Minutes of the June meeting, as previously posted on the Web site, were amended, prior to being approved.

Webmaster Barney Poston reported that the Web site has many updates, including a listing of those with current JAGA Scholarships and those that were recently awarded a JAGA Scholarship for this coming semester.

Vice President–Tournaments, Bob Streightiff had Barney Poston report on the Fathers Day Tournament held this past June 28/29.A wonderful tournament was plagued with poor weather. Gary and Conner Reed made up the winning team. The JAGA Scholarship Fund also was a big winner; $1465.62 was raised for JAGA. Lee Crowe reminded us of the August 4th 2 man at Saugrass Country Club and the Bill Black Tournament on September 8th at the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club (Lagoon).  Directors should vigorously promote these events.  Get your entries in early. The 47th JAGA City Amateur continues Thanks to Marty and Miles King. July 17 through 20 at San Jose Country Club, will feature many of the best young talent of the greater Jacksonville area.  Bob Streightiff is chairman of this year’s JAGA City Amateur event.

Vice President-Administration, Jim Edwards reported (1) the next JAGA directors meeting will be Tuesday, August 19 , 2008 beginning at 10:30 AM at Panther Creek Golf Club. There will be a limit of 55 at this meeting. (2) The Directors Meetings for 2009 are still being worked out. Think about having a JAGA meeting at your club next year and let Jim know as soon as possible if you are interested.  In addition to the Pro-President, we usually try for nine private and two public venues in the scheduling of a year of meetings.

Old Business – None

New Business – (1) Steve Wyand reported that progress has been made with Jim Furyk to be our Guest Speaker in October. However, Steve needs your written question(s) for Jim Furyk no later than the September JAGA directors meeting.

(2) Barney Poston pointed out a very important part of any tournament chairman’s planning. What to do if the weather turns very bad. Know when to call it off and have an evacuation plan for when you do so.

Guest Speaker- Jim Bailey, Publisher of The Golf News, opened with the presentation to JAGA President, Lee Crowe, of a framed copy of the 2007 Man of the Year Award cover from an earlier Golf News. Thereafter, Jim explained that Golf News has gone Live. Much more up to date information is now available at the Golf News online site. Check it out and visit often at www.golfnewsjax.com. Give Jim information about your club and its activities. Local News for Local Golfers.

Scholarship Committee Chairman- Tom Tienery reviewed the actions of the JAGA Scholarship Trustees’ two meetings in June. (1) Eleven new Scholarships were awarded. This brings the present total to 35 Scholarships. Check the JAGA web site at www.jaxareagolfassn.com for a complete listing of scholarship recipients. (2) $3000 per year is awarded to each qualified scholar. That is a total of $105,000 for one year. (3) Applications for Scholarships have been removed from the Web site, but are available from Tom. Directors should become familiar with the form and process before signing a candidates application. (4) Needs of an applicant may be given more weight in the future. (5) If an award was not granted following a submission, and a continued interest for future consideration exists, then have the candidate restate that interest, in writing, with any additional updated information.  NOTE  We generate 50 to 60 thousand dollars in income annually from club donations and Gabe Sommers interest. At the present rate, we will have to decrease the number of annually awarded scholarships. Keep your excellent efforts up.  Tom then accepted contributions to the JAGA Scholarship Trust from: (A) Barney Poston, $1462 from the Fathers Day Championship; (B) Joe Power, $1000 from the JAGA Seniors Championship; (C) Don Barker and Joe Fitzgerald, $6900 from Selva Marina Country Club; and (D) Gene Hughson, Chuck Randall and Bob Wilder, $500 from the Men’s Club of Magnolia Point Golf and CC.

Pairings Coordinator, Ed Tormollen reported that we have 5 no-shows today. Pairing sheets and team make up were printed and distributed. Check carts for your hole assignment.
