New Business – Ray Gottschalk asked about the number of participating Clubs and whether any were still in arrears. JAGA currently has 43 paid up member clubs. Notables reportedly remaining unpaid include: Cecil Field, Eagle Landing, NAS Jax, North Hampton, Ocean Hammock and Osprey Cove.
Guest Speaker – Tom Dudley, President of the Florida State Golf Association (FSGA), and a United States Golf Association (USGA) Rules Expert was very effectively introduced to us by Al Levene. (We learned a bit later that Jon Thompson of Timuquana had everything, but a drum roll, ready for Tom’s introduction). Tom Dudley warned of the misconceptions one might glean from the reference to an organizations acronym. While the previously referenced organizations may be well known and understood by all using their acronyms, the (PGA) is not the Professional Golf Association, the (R&A) has its connections to Scotland and not rifles and arrows, (GAF) is the Golf Association of Florida and the Furman University Christian Knights are not best known for activities associated with their acronym. The FSGA is made up of some 500 Golf Clubs, having about 180,000 members. It performs 300+/- course ratings (at no charge) each year. A tournament pairings package and scholarships are among its many benefits. Since 1913, the Florida State Golf Association (FSGA) has been preserving and protecting the game of golf for future generations. It is here to serve Florida’s golfers of all ages and abilities. The FSGA conducts more than 250 days of competition including 25 State Championships and over 40 USGA qualifying events throughout the year. The FSGA administers the USGA’s GHIN Handicap System in the state. The FSGA also consists of a course rating department that coordinates course ratings with FSGA volunteers in the state. The FSGA serves as an umbrella organization for more than 130 junior programs in Florida. The Florida Junior Tour (FJT) offers junior golfers in the state quality competitions at affordable prices. Regular Membership is available to those with an active GHIN # for $45 per year. You could become involved by volunteering at FSGA tournaments or on course rating committees. Closer to home, get involved with your own clubs’ handicap committee. For more information go online to www.fsga.org. Tom concluded his presentation by answering several rules questions that were posed.
Pairings Coordinator, Ed Tormollen was absent. However, pairings and tees for the day’s golf were presented. Don’t forget, give all the up-to-date information needed (current index and tees) when signing up for the Directors meetings.
The Blessing for Lunch was given by Earl Kelly.
Meeting Adjourned at 11:33 AM
Respectfully Submitted, Joe Power, Secretary |
