Jacksonville Area Golf Association Directors Meeting Hyde Park Golf Club November 18, 2008
Officers Present: Lee Crowe, Jerry Kay, Bob Streightiff, Joe Power, Jim Andrews, Jim Edwards, and Barney Poston. Absent: Tom Tierney. President-Lee Crowe called the meeting to order at 10:58 AM. Immediately after a Welcome from Hyde Park’s staff, Lee requested a moment of silence for officers who have either passed away or who continue to suffer from ongoing illnesses. Forty-three directors and guests were then introduced to one another. Treasurer, Jerry Kay reported a treasury balance of $5,348.58. Bills have been sent out to clubs for 2009 dues. Secretary’s Report, Minutes of the October meeting, as previously posted on the Web site, were approved. Vice President - Tournaments, Bob Streightiffs’ report included (1) Lee Crowe reporting that the last 2-man of the year will be held at the Slammer and Squire on Nov. 24th. Note the cost will be $115 for this final 2-man event of 2008. (2) This years Pro-President Tournament will be limited to 32 teams and held at The Palencia Club on Monday Dec.15th. Note the date change. (3) Hats ($15) and visors ($10) are still available. (4) The JAGA Juniors Tournament is being worked on but not finalized for 2009. (5) The City Amateur is set for July 23-26, 2009 at The Palencia Club. Yearly site rotation is in the future. Vice President-Administration, Jim Edwards, reported that the Directors Meeting Schedule for 2009 is set. Check the Web. Webmaster – Barney Poston reported that (1) the complete JAGA schedule for 2009 is on the Web site. You may want to check the Interclub Schedule for next year. It is also included on the JAGA site and (2) many pictures of JAGA members,with Jim Furyk, are included on the web site with the minutes from the October meeting at Windsor Parke. Please check the site for dates. Scholarship Committee – Mike Cooper accepted a contribution to the JAGA Scholarship Fund from Jim Cook, on behalf of the Hyde Park Golf Club, in the amount of $2300. Guest Speaker – Pepper Peete, Executive Director of The First Tee of Jacksonville explained The First Tee mission. To impact the lives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf. There are three different locations in the Jacksonville area; the primary is located off of I-95 at Golf Aire. Started with her husband, Calvin, this non-profit organization stresses nine core values in its programs. They include Integrity, Sportsmanship, Courtesy, Perseverance, Respect, Confidence, Responsibility, Honesty and Judgment. These and other life skills are presented at three different age grouping levels to youth between the ages of 7 to 14, mostly on Saturday mornings or throughout the summer. All are provided at a safe haven for the many youth that now participate. Pepper gave several examples of success stories that have developed from this most important and successful program. Election of Officers: The committee of Don Haws, Lee Crowe and Jim Andrews presented the following slate for approval: President–Jim Edwards; V.P. Administration-Bob Streightiff; V.P. Tournaments-Joe Power; Secretary – Gary Owensby: Treasurer – Jerry Kay; Executive Secretary- Barney Poston; Scholarships – Tom Tierney; Past President – Lee Crowe. Without any expressed objection, the slate was approved.
President Crowe reflected on his 15 years with JAGA. Much has changed in that period, most for the positive. A special thanks was extended to Barney Poston, Russell Hamilton, Carl Arnold, Al Levene, Ed Tormollen, Bob Streightiff and Jim Edwards. Keep the Moment of Silence, keep the Blessing on Food, be a better director and leave the organization better at the end of each year. Pairings Coordinator, Russell Hamilton - Pairing sheets and team make up were printed and distributed. Check carts for your hole assignment.
The Blessing for Lunch was given by Don Barker.
