dues for 2008.
Secretary’s
Report – Joe Power reported
that the minutes of the November meeting had been passed out to everyone
just prior to the meeting. A motion to approve those minutes, without
further reading, was approved. Vice President – Tournaments, Bob
Streightiff, 1) Reminded all that players must come from
licensed and certified clubs in order to be eligible for prizes in JAGA
tournaments, (2) Beginning in February, JAGA directors play and
scoring will be governed by Stableford points (based upon current USGA
indices submitted by directors) and the tees to be played
selected at the time of sign up. Make sure you designate both current
USGA index and desired tees at time of your sign up. Web
Master-Barney Poston reported that Josh Anderson is the new
Head Professional at Magnolia Point Golf and CC. Keep a constant eye for
updates and changes relating to JAGA and/or golf events by way of the
Web site. Scholarship Committee Chairman- Tom Tierney reported
that all is going well. There is one opening for a scholarship this next
semester. Get your candidate in quickly, if you have one.
Contributions to the JAGA Scholarship Fund: Joe Herring gave
a check in amount of $300 from
Quail Heights. Earl Kelly presented a check for $500 from an event sponsored
by Blue Cypress Golf and CC in memory of Bob Cuartero. Ed
McDonald presented $546 from the Marsh Landing CC Senior Men’s
Association . Thank You All! Vice President-Administration, Jim
Edwards announced that next months meeting will be at
the Country Club of Orange Park. Let’s hope that attendance matches
today’s. Check the locations for next year’s meetings on the JAGA Web
site. Old Business -None. New Business – (1) President Crowe
announced two policies recently passed by the Executive Committee:
(A) A Director who signs up for a meeting and fails to attend without
giving proper and/or prior notification to Ed Tormollen, must pay $50 to
JAGA before attending another meeting. (B) In order to play golf
following a JAGA Directors meeting, one must attend both the business
meeting and lunch that precedes the play of golf. (2) Steve Wyand
(Sawgrass) found that JAGA was not as well known as it should be and
suggested that we get more coverage for our activities. Carl Arnold
suggested that we invite Garry Smits to be a guest speaker. (3)
Lee Crowe congratulated this years President Cup winners:
Jud Ammiano, Jack Meyer and the remainder of the Marsh Creek team.
The Presidents Cup needs to expand to 36 teams in December of 2008.
Steve Wyand introduced the Guest Speaker – John Hayt. The
University of North Florida (UNF)
has produced countless benefits to much of the Jacksonville region.
UNF
has approximately 16,000 students, a
faculty in excess of 500, better than a one billion dollar impact
on the local economy, 17 Division I teams ( as of 2004), better than 240
athletes who carry GPAs of 3.125 and a top notch Golf Program. College
golf today is HUGH. There are more than 13,000 college golf teams today
covering various Division levels. UNFs Golf program has been
around since 1980 but did not received its NCAA Division I status until
the 1995/96 year. Nicknamed the Ospreys, UNF has been ranked as high as
9th out of the 400 NCAA Division I golf programs. Much of the
Ospreys success can be attributed to John Hayt and his
contributions to the Hayt Learning Center. This McCumber Golf
managed facility is lighted, has 4 holes with various angled tees,
covers 38 acres of land and cost about 2 million dollars to build in
2002. It is an outstanding facility for Coach Scott Schroeder and
student golfers including Chris Kennedy, J.C. Horn and Mike O’Neal.
You may see them and other top golfers in the 2008 Hayt Collegiate
Invitational this coming February 17-19, at Sawgrass Country
Club.
This year will
feature 15 college teams including many from the top 25 college team in
the USA. Mike O’Neal is a JAGA Scholarship
recipient who maintains a 3.8 GPA at UNF and is the current JAGA City Amateur champion. He addressed the
Directors, thanked us for the Scholarship, and said he has learned to be
both consistent (with his short game) and tough at handling adversity
(slow starts). “Golf allows me to meet many nice people and many good
players.” Thanks you Mike and John for a most informative and
interesting program. Pairings Coordinator, Ed Tormollen
announced pairings for the day’s golf. The Blessing for Lunch
was given by Tom Philyaw. Meeting Adjourned at
11:38 AM.
Respectfully
Submitted,
Joe Power, Secretary
