Jacksonville Area Golf Association Directors Meeting Sawgrass Country Club November 20, 2007
Officers Present: Lee Crowe, Jerry Kay, Jim Andrews, Bob Streightiff, Jim Edwards, Barney Poston, and Tom Tierney. Absent: JoePower. President, Lee Crowe called the meeting to order at 10:00 AM. Lee welcomed directors and guests, followed by introductions of 65 directors and guests. New directors included Russell Hamilton of Panther Creek and Joe Fitzgerald of Selva Marina. President Crowe asked for a moment of silence for all deceased JAGA members and for all those suffering due to injury and/or illness. It was announced that Jim Todd is leaving to assume a pastoral position in a Kentucky congregation. Treasurer, Jerry Kay reported that we have $6,146.26 in the bank, including some entry monies from the Pro-President. Secretary’s Report, Gary Owensby filled in for Joe Power. The October Minutes had been posted on the JAGA Web site. A motion, made to approve those minutes without further reading, Passed. President Crowe stated that this was the first meeting that Joe had missed and thanked him for his hard work. Vice President–Tournaments, Bob Streightiff, thanked directors who have served as volunteers this year in JAGA Tournaments and presented a hat to each. The 2008 Tournament Schedule is posted on the JAGA web site. There will be an increase in 2-man tournaments to 6 this year. Please step up and volunteer wherever you can. Others tournaments include: JAGA Seniors at Eagle Harbor 4/7-4/9; City Amateur at San Jose, 7/17-7/20 (Miles King is working on a sponsor for the event); the Bill Black Memorial will be on the Lagoon Course at the Ponte Vedra Golf and CC on 9/8; and the JAGA Juniors will compete on 9/13-9/14 at the Jax Beach Golf Club. A “hard card” has been prepared for rules and regulations covering all JAGA tournaments. A new tournament committee has been formed, consisting of Bob Streightiff, Al Levine, Ed Tormollen and Barney Poston. Its goal will be tournament improvement. Finally, Streightiff announced that in 2008 JAGA tournaments, no prizes will be given to a player who comes from a club that is not USGA licensed. Vice President-Aministration, Jim Edwards announced a change of date for the February meeting at Orange Park CC from 2/19 to 2/12. Today’s turn out is great and should be an example of all our meetings attendance. Scholarship Committee Chairman- Tom Tierney said that all is well with the committees dealings. Keep those applications coming in for next year. A check for $172 was presented for the 2-man at San Jose and a check for $400 was given to treasurer Jerry Kay, for the 2-man at Palencia Golf Club. Web Master-Barney Poston reported that director Earl Strickland, while doing reasonably well, is not progressing as well as he would like. Barney also reported that we are using small portable printers along with computers at JAGA tournaments. Complements to Ed Tormollen for his fine work. Old Business – None. New Business – George Halvorsen gave an update on his recovery from heart by-pass surgery and thanked all for their support. Jim Andrews displayed the “new found” ( in Fred Seely’s garage) plaque that was traditionally presented to the City Amateur winner signifying “ the golfer of the year”. Earl Kelly explained that the “trophy” and the winners check for $500 was given by Jack Nicklaus, “Don’t you have a Junior program you can use this money for?” as he left following his winning of the Jacksonville Open, at Selva Marina. The start of a JAGA Scholarship Fund. Don Haws reported that “on course scoring” will be used for the Underwood Cup Matches this Feb.18&19 at Timuquana CC. Need 12 volunteers. Ed Tormollen requests that accurate guests’ indexes be included at signup. Ray Gottschalk welcomed everyone to Sawgrass CC and reminded us that we are all gentlemen and gentlemen do not wear hats in the Club House. Ed Tucker, Sawgrass Pro, welcomed JAGA directors and outlined play for East and West Courses. Those were the courses that once made up the TPC. President Crowe discussed the need for directors to not only play golf, but to also attend and participate in the meetings. Jim Todd thanked JAGA for its past fellowship, stressed the need to keep changing lest we be left behind, and wished all Good Luck and God’s Speed. He then gave The Blessing for Lunch. The Meeting Adjourned at 10:50 AM.
