Directors Meeting

The Champions Club at Julington Creek

July 17, 2007

 

Officers Present:  Lee Crowe, Jerry Kay, Bob Streightiff, Joe Power, Barney Poston, Tom Tierney and Jim Andrews. Absent Jim Edwards. 

 

President,  Lee Crowe called the meeting to order at 10:27 AM. A moment of silence in memory of past members  and Bill Black followed. Champion’s general director, Jim Lear welcomed us, thanked and congratulated JAGA for their contributions to golf.     Directors and guests totaling 46 were introduced. Among  those in attendance were several of this year's Scholarship recipients.


Treasurer, Jerry Kay
reported a treasury balance of $24,396.10. This balance includes income of about $14,000 from the City Amateur. Many of their bills remain to be paid.


Secretary’s Report,
Minutes of the June meeting were approved , as posted on the Web site.


Vice President-Administration,
Jim Edwards was not present for a report.
 

Vice President–Tournaments, Bob Streightiff, reported on the City Amateur held July 12 through 15 at Marsh Landing and Deerwood Country Clubs. The event was a resounding success. An outstanding field of many talented individuals will cause next year’s event to require a qualifier. JAGA scholar, Mike O’Neal was the wire to wire winner at 14 under. Bob presented the winner’s trophy to Mike along with a framed four scorecards from the event. Many thanks go to Al Levene, Ed Tormollen and Barney Poston for their most valuable assistance throughout the City Amateur.

 

Jim Andrews announced the 1st 4 Ball tournament, in a series of three, will be held at 9AM at Ponte Vedra on August 20th. The fee is $85 a person. Pay outs are expected for half the filed. If you play in the first, you are guaranteed entry in the second (upon proper payment of fee) to be held at San Jose. There will be three divisions in the series. Golf Bags will be awarded to the winners of each division.

Barney Poston,
reported that the Fathers Day tournament had a very good field of 88 players. The team of Robert Taylor Sr./Jr. won the event with a four under par. Many thanks are extended to Al Levene, Ed Tormollen, Bob Streightiff, Ed Witten, Carl Arnold, Terry Williams and Jerry Kay for their assistance throughout the weekend.

Lee Crowe
reported that the 5th Annual Bill Black Memorial tournament will be held on September 10th at the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club. This will be a 1st class  event with Auction items to include Bill’s golf clubs.

Scholarship Committee Chairman- Tom Tienery  
was presented with contributions to the JAGA Scholarship Fund: $1035 presented by Barney Poston from the Father’s Day Tournament. $55 from Don Haws and the Deercreek Men’s Club. $ 1135 from San Jose presented by Mike Cooper and Tom Tierney.  Tom then introduced each of the new JAGA scholarship winners to the Directors. Expressions of thanks were made by each recipient.

Old Business –
Fred Seeley reported future speakers for the JAGA meetings will include, but not be limited to, Jack Peter, Ron Cross and Matt Kutchar.
 

New Business – Motion made and seconded to approve the appointment of Barney Poston as Executive Secretary of JAGA, filling the post left vacant with the death of Bill Black. APPROVED
 

Announcements -  (1) Next months meeting is Tuesday August 21st at Jacksonville Beach Golf Club. (2) The JAGA Junior Tournament will be September 14th and 15th at the Jax Beach Golf Club. (3) The Pro-President will be held December 3rd at the Deerwood Country Club. (4) Bob Streightiff reported that the efforts of many resulted in World Golf Village joining the ranks in JAGA. (5) Hyde Park will hold its Junior Tournament on August 11th. (6) Tom Tierney will need Grades (just finished) and next Semesters Schedule from each Scholarship recipient in order to keep the money flowing. (7) Tommy Miller’s “words of wisdom on Happiness” will not be captured on CD for at least one year.


Open Discussion –
Miles King asked what could be done to bring back the JAGA Couples Tournament. After discussion, Earl Strickland was given the green light to look into its resurrection. Tom Tierney said that applications for JAGA scholarships will be kept active for 12 to 18 months after they were received.
 

Pairings Coordinator, Ed Tormollen announced the pairings for the day’s golf.
 

The Blessing for Lunch was given by Jim Todd.
