Directors Meeting

Deerwood Country Club

June 18, 2007

 

Officers Present:  Lee Crowe, Jerry Kay, Bob Streightiff, Joe Power, Barney Poston and Jim Andrews. Absent Jim Edwards and Tom Tierney. 

 

President,  Lee Crowe called the meeting to order at 10:30 AM. Thereafter, Directors and guests totaling 110 were introduced. We were honored to have present, Charles Denny from Gainesville Fl. Mr. Denny recently made a $25,000 contribution to the JAGA Scholarship fund. A scholarship will be awarded in Mr. Denny’s name. Scott Grospitch, Deerwood Professional, welcomed all present.

 

Treasurer, Jerry Kay reported a treasury balance of $18,146.08. This balance includes income to both the City Amateur and 2-Man tournaments that are set for later in the year.

 

Secretary’s Report, Minutes of the May meeting, as posted on the Web site, were approved.

 

Vice President-Aministration, Jim Edwards was not present for a report. However, if you are interested in  having a JAGA meeting at your Club, during the 2008 or 2009 calendar years, let Jim know as soon as possible.

 

Vice President–Tournaments, Bob Streightiff, had each representative from future tournaments report.  Barney Poston reported on the Fathers Day event, scheduled for June 23 and 24 at Hidden Hills. Bob Sreightiff  reported on the City Amateur this July 12 through 15 at both Marsh Landing and Deerwood Country Clubs. Jim Andrews announced the first 4 Ball tournament, in a

series of three such 2-Man events, will be held at 9AM at Ponte Vedra on August 20th. The fee is $85 a person. Pay outs are expected for half the filed. Later 2-Man events will be held at San Jose and Palencia.

 

Webmaster – Barney Poston, reminded us that any late changes associated with registration for a JAGA meeting should be made known to Ed Tormollen at 631-9979, not to the Web site.

 

Scholarship Committee Chairman- Tom Tienery was not present. In his absence, President Crowe announced that 10 new Scholarships were awarded to various applicants beginning with the Fall of 2007. Bob Streightiff  announced that these added ten bring JAGA’s total current grant of Scholarships to 33. Contributions to the JAGA Scholarship Fund: Southern Oaks, $500 presented by Howard Whitaker, additional thanks to Mr. Brooks and Mr. Roundtree. Champions Senior Men, $230 from Jerry Kay; additional amounts come in via Bill Black cards. 

 

Old Business – None.

 

New Business – Ed Witten announced that Don Curts,  JAGA President in 1978, is suffering with ALS. Keep him in your prayers and send him a card.

 

The Pro-President meeting, scheduled for Dec 3, at Amelia National has encountered conflicts that will require an amended date and/or venue. Stay tuned.

 

Guest Speakers– This month Fred Seely arranged a panel discussion moderated by Chad Lucovsky. The panel included Lee Crowe, President of JAGA; Mr. Joe Wyzkoski III, Managing Partner of Magnolia Point Golf and Country Club; Christopher Neff, N.F. Golf Course Superintendents Association Pres.; and Todd Bork, Director of Golf at San Jose C.C. Chad asked each panel member to briefly explain their groups “Purpose”. Crowe: Some include the promotion of golf, arrange competitive tournaments and grant scholarships to youth. Bork: Educate and Coordinate activities for the 350+ Golf professionals in the area, promote the game with an emphasis on youth and Junior Golf programs. Neff: Promote golf through turf grass management, educate and coordinate activities for @ 35 vendors and 100 course superintendents and 100 assistants, manage changes resulting from the environment and advances in technology. Wyzkoski: Manage  services and amenities to a community. (Restaurant, Tennis, Swimming, Golf. Chad Lucovsky then asked the panel “ What needs to be done to improve Golf in the area?” Wyzkoski:  This is not Myrtle Beach; emphasize activities and services to the Family.

Neff: Promote the game through activities for Youth. Activities like those of 1st Tee. Bork: Promote events and activities that will attract golf to a group of New Adults. E.g. 1st Coast Golf. Crowe: In addition to the activities that each group is involved with at present, provide reasonably priced and varied Tournaments to golfers in the area. Questions thereafter dealt with golf affordability, over seeding, grasses and trees. When all is said and done, money plays a major role in each.

Announcements -   Next months meeting is Tuesday July 17th at The Champions Club at Julington Creek.

 

Pairings Coordinator, Ed Tormollen announced the tees for the day’s golf.

 

The Blessing for Lunch was given by Jim Todd.
