Jacksonville Area Golf Association Directors Meeting Deerwood Country Club June 19, 2006
Officers Present: Jim Andrews, Bill Black, Lee Crowe, Don Haws, Jerry Kay, Barney Poston, Bob Streightiff Officers Absent: Jim Edwards, Tom Tierney President, Jim Andrews, called the meeting to order at 10:30 A.M. with 104 Directors and guests present; including general managers, golf professionals and greens superintendents. The Directors introduced themselves and their guests. Scott Grospitch, Head Golf Professional, welcomed us to the club and expressed his club’s pleasure in supporting JAGA. Jim thanked Fred Seely and Chad Luccovsky of Golf News for their fine support of JAGA. Secretary, Bob Streightiff’s minutes from the last meeting at Magnolia Point CC were approved as posted on the web site. Treasurer, Jerry Kay, reported a treasury balance of $8,098.34 with all bills paid. Vice President-Administration, Lee Crowe, informed us Eagle Harbor Country Club will host the next meeting on July 18th. In the absence of Vice President-Tournaments, Jim Edwards, Lee Crowe asked for reports from the tournament chairmen. Lee Crowe reminded us the final Two Man event is at Timuquana Country Club. He reported 36 teams are entered thus far and the entry fee is $89.00. Next year’s Two Man tournament will have four specific events. Barney Poston reminded us the Father’s Day tournament will be a Modified Pinehurst event on June 24 & 25 at Hidden Hills CC with 78 entries thus far. Don Haws indicated the 2006 City Amateur will be held at Marsh Landing CC and Deerwood Country Club July 13-16, 2006. Bart O’Leary, Ed Tormollen and Bob Streightiff spoke of their specific responsibilities for the tournament. Don also thanked the Golf News and Florida Times Union for their support of the City Amateur. The field is limited to 60 players and an awards luncheon will follow on Sunday. Al Levene informed us 27 participants have entered the Juniors tournament to date and asked the Directors to talk up the event at their clubs. Al then introduced Boots Farley, Head Golf Professional, from Jacksonville Beach Golf Club who spoke to the group regarding JAGA’s benefit to the community and in particular the scholarship fund. He read a letter from his son, Hayes Farley, thanking JAGA for the scholarship he received over the four years at Furman University. Lee Crowe reminded the Directors of the Bill Black Classic to be held on September 11, 2006 at Ponte Vedra Resort. Scholarship Chair, Tom Tierney, was absent. A contribution to the trust was received from Champions Golf Club for $350.00. Old Business Ed Witten indicated director shirts are in stock and he has JAGA hat bands for sale for $2.00. New Business Barney Poston received confirmation from the golf professionals in attendance that the monthly JAGA meeting minutes are being forwarded to them. Jim Andrews spoke about Earl Kelly pamphlet of JAGA’s first year history in 1954-55. Jim also told the group that JAGA has awarded $1,600,000 in scholarships since the trust’s inception. He asked the golf professionals present for feedback on their expectations of JAGA. Don Haws asked the golf professionals to suggest to their peers who aren’t JAGA members they consider joining the organization. Ed Witten informed the Directors a constitutional amendment is required to increase the number of directors from each member club to three. The issue will be discussed at next month’s meeting. Pairings Coordinator, Ed Tormollen, announced the pairings for the players were posted on the golf carts. The meeting adjourned at 11:20 A.M. Respectively submitted, Bob Streightiff, Secretary |
