JACKSONVILLE AREA GOLF ASSOCIATION

DIRECTORS MEETING

APRIL 15, 2003

QUAIL HEIGHTS GOLF CLUB

President Don Haws opened the meeting at 10:03 a.m. We had 29 directors present, including two new directors, Arch Copeland of Deercreek and Ed Tormollen of Jacksonville Beach .

Treasurer Jerry Kay reported we still have eight clubs who have not paid their dues. We currently have a balance of $8,119.39 in the bank. Jim Andrews reminded us that the May meeting will be at Pine Lakes and the June meeting at Magnolia Point. The August meeting at Ponte Vedra is the meeting to which we will be inviting our club pros and general managers. Since there have been quite a few changes in recent years, this will help each group to get to know each other better.

Tournament Up-date: The Bill Black Golf Classic is set for October 4, 2003 and all is progressing well. The Senior Tournament had 84 players and started 30 minutes late the first day. This made for a long, slow day, but play was at a much better pace on the second day. It was brought up that at all of our tournaments JAGA Directors should be the starters and thus better able to control the pace of play. We also need more directors to help with each of our tournaments. The Mid-Am Tournament to be held May 9th and 10th has only 10 players so far. Hopefully there will be many late additions as there was last year. The Father’s Day Tournament on June 7th and 8th will be held at Ponte Vedra. The first day best ball net on the Ocean Course and day two modified Pinehurst on the Lagoon Course. Barney Poston, Chairman, said they would like to get 120 players this year. Also, $5.00 from every entrance fee of every tournament will go to the Scholarship Fund.

Ed Witten reported that next month is the deadline for submitting nominations for JAGA scholarships. As of now, we expect to have eight openings. It was also suggested that we make June our scholarship month when we invite current scholarship recipients to our meeting instead of later in the summer. We should get better participation. Tom Tierney, Past President, is going to take over as Scholarship Chairman. It’s time to give Ed a break. He has performed this job for 14 or 15 years. Thank you, Ed, for a job well done. He will still be here to assist when necessary.

Jacksonville Beach donated $1,000.00 to the Scholarship Fund. There was some discussion of moving the meeting back to 10:30 a.m. instead of 10:00 a.m. This was turned over to the Ways and Means Committee for further review. Emerson Darst, our host Director, introduced our guest speakers Mike Lee and John Piersol from  Lake City Community College . They thanked us for helping with scholarships and gave us an overlay of the programs available at the college.

Meeting adjourned at 11:27 a.m.

Cordially,

Mike Cooper
