JACKSONVILLE AREA GOLF ASSOCIATION

DIRECTORS MEETING

JANUARY 21, 2003

DEERWOOD COUNTRY CLUB

The meeting was called to order at 10:04 a.m. Officers present were President Don Haws, V.P. Administration Jim Andrews, V.P. Tournaments Lee Crowe, Executive Secretary Bill Black, Treasurer Jerry Kay, Secretary Mike Cooper and Scholarships Ed Witten. There were a total of 39 directors and 2 guests present.

Jerry Kay reported that we have $7,792.82 in the bank and that 22 member clubs have paid their dues for 2003.

The ways and means committee has been contacting non-member clubs and so far has had a positive reception from most of them. Don showed the Member Certificate that will be given to each member course this year.

There was some discussion about denying players from non-member clubs access to our tournaments. This was referred to the Board and will be reported on by Jim Andrews next meeting. Lee Crowe reported on tournaments and announced the addition of “The Bill Black Charitable Trust Scholarship Tournament.” This tournament is slated for October 4, 2003 at Champions Club of Julington Creek.

Jerry Bussell talked about the fund raiser at Cimarrone Golf Club on January 31, 2003 and encouraged everyone present to play. Ed Witten gave his year-end report. We now have twenty-two students on scholarships. He is still waiting to hear from seven of them to confirm they are still in school. Six students will no longer be eligible for more money at the end of this semester. Starting with the fall term, we will increase the support for each student to $1,000/semester. The scholarship committee, along with the reduction in number of scholarships last year, approved this. Tom Tierney has become the backup for Ed should the need arise. There were several donations to JAGA: $500 from both Palatka and Cimarrone in December 2002, $2,500 was raised for scholarships from the Pro-President in December, and $550 has been donated so far in the memory of Dave Clark (Nick Clark’s brother).  The Hidden Hills Men's Golf Association donated $500 to the scholarship fund at this meeting.

Don Haws presented Rocky Staples with the first “Friend of JAGA Award.” This is to be awarded to those individuals (non-officers and non-directors) who have gone above and beyond in their support of JAGA.

Bart O’Leary reminded everyone of the rules seminar on February 18, 2003 at Timuquana Country Club. Bart also recognized Carl Arnold for his insight in initiating the JAGA website. Barney Poston was awarded the “Red Gossman Service Award” for his past and future hard work in maintaining our website.

Don gave an update on Homer Nix and recognized several of the directors present for their contributions to JAGA over the years. Don also discussed the forming of a “50th year committee” for our upcoming 50th anniversary. Bart O’Leary was given two JAGA shirts (his choice) for his service as President.

The pairings were then given and the meeting was adjourned.

Cordially,

Mike Cooper

Secretary
