President
Bart O’Leary called the meeting to order at 10:37 a.m. Officers
present were Bart O’Leary, Don Haws, Jim Andrews, Bill Black, Lee
Crowe, Jerry Kay and Ed Witten. There were 45 directors present.
Directors and guests were introduced. Bart spoke about the passing of
Tom Johnston, Director at Hyde Park. There were many directors present
at Tom’s funeral and a large number of family and friends. Tom’s
daughter and son gave a beautiful eulogy for their father. We remembered
this family in a moment of silent prayer.
The minutes for the April meeting were accepted as read. The
Treasurer’s report was read by Jerry Kay. We have $3,921.11 in the
bank plus $2,000.00 to be deposited and all bills are paid. This report
was accepted as read. Ed Witten reported on scholarships.
A correction was made on a scholarship donation made previously
in the amount of $666.00 and should be listed as being from the Mill
Cove Ladies’ Association. There was a check for $516.66 from the
Spring Mixed at Fernandina Beach presented to the scholarship fund by
Jim Edwards. Vice President of Tournaments, Jim Andrews, asked for
reports from Jim Edwards on the Spring-Mixed at Fernandina and Bill
Black on the Mid-Am at Magnolia Point. There were 51 players in the
Mid-Am tournament, mostly low-handicap players. There were NO
directors in the tournament. Why can’t our directors support our
tournaments? Bill has asked this question many times. Bill presented a
check from Mid-Am to the scholarship fund in the amount of $266.34. Don
Haws, Vice President, announced that we have 6 clubs signed up for
meetings in 2003. We need 6 more. Carl Arnold announced that we have 27
teams entered so far for the Father’s Day tournament at Ponte Vedra,
June 8th & 9th. We need more pros to enter.
Bart O’Leary reported on the JAGA Hilyer Event coming in July, a
qualifier on the 12th at Deerwood and July 19-21 at Deerwood
and Deercreek. Jim Andrews mentioned about the great coverage given to
JAGA by the golf news. Also from the Florida Times-Union. Ed Witten
reported that we have 23 on scholarships now. Three will graduate this
semester and 2 will graduate in December. We will issue l2 scholarships
this semester. JAGA meeting in July at Selva Marina will be Scholarship
Day. Checks for scholarship fund $200.00 Fiddlers Green and $355.00
Deercreek Men’s Senior Association. Jim Callender FSGA was not present
due to a back injury.
Old
business – Dean Blankenship was having shoulder surgery and was unable
to attend. Dean asked Bart to mention the needs for golf equipment for
the Junior program. Several directors brought equipment and balls. Bart
said he would be sure they were delivered to Dean. Bart also announced
that beginning with the June meeting at Queens Harbour that our meetings
will start at 10:00 a.m. This will give us more time for more substance
to our meetings. There will be several new committees forming in July.
Bart announced that he had responses from 26 clubs on the surveys sent
out by directors to their pros. Jerry Kay, Treasurer, reported a
substantial savings on postage since going the E-mail system. John
Eldridge, Head Pro from Royal St. Augustine, welcomed JAGA and spoke
about the golf course, discussing conditioning and several specials they
have on golf outings. The course has been open for l year. Jim Edwards
announced golf pairings and meeting was adjourned at 11:45 for lunch and
golf. The golf course played tough and tight, and the wind condition was
really difficult. First place team was +4, Lee Crowe, Larry Brugh, Jim
Todd & Dan Eubanks. Jim Edwards’ team finished 2nd at
+2.
